Philosophy paper Instructions

  • The paper you create and write becomes part of Turnitin. So please make sure that this paper is 100% original.
  • Use and cite only Soccio and the Summa Theologica. (see the attached files)
  • Write a two-part paper (paragraph form with no bullet points, Arabic numerals, or letters [a., b.]) that answers Part A and Part B separately.


Technical Points: (Points will be taken off for not following directions.)

  • Your paper is to be 5 full double-spaced pages (not including the Works Cited page) in black Times New Roman 12 pt. font with 1-inch margins.
  • Do not use first-person and second-person pronouns except for Part B #3.
  • In the heading, flush with the left margin with name, class, and date, do not put the Professor’s name. [This is an exception to MLA Style.]
  • Include an introduction to the paper based on the two questions (not a general introduction to the philosophers), body, and conclusion to the paper (not a general conclusion to the philosophers).
  • Use MLA Style for in-text citations.
  • Works Cited – Follow MLA Style Sheet (Hanging Indent for Works Cited)
    • Soccio (Soccio, Douglas J. Archetypes of Wisdom: An Introduction to Philosophy.8th ed. Cengage, 2013)
    • Summa Theologica (Aquinas, Summa Theologica 1.2.3)
    • In-text: 1st citation (Aquinas, Summa Theologica 1.2.3), after that (Aquinas 1.2.3).
  • Cite key phrases from the assigned sources. Do not quote sentences – paraphrase. This paper summarizes your understanding of the concepts.


Directions: Answer Parts A and B separately in paragraph form. Label them as such.

1- Flow of paper:

a. Introduce the paper with a separate (General) introduction and conclude the paper with a separate (General) conclusion.

b.Part A and Part B are each to have three sections:

– Topic sentence/introduction to its questions

– Body (answer to the questions in order)

– Conclusion to its questions. (Thus, general introduction, Part A [labeled as Part A], Part B [labeled as Part B], and general conclusion.)

c. Transition to each section without using outline form (Arabic numerals and lowercase letters).

2- Use the textbook to support your answers. Use technical terms to name the Causes and Ways. Cite the sources. Do not copy entire sentences. This test summarizes your understanding of the concepts.

General Introduction:

Part A: Aristotle’s Causes 30 pts. Answer the questions fully in order in paragraph form.

Begin Part A with an introduction to Aristotle’s questions.
1. a.
Name (with technical terms) and explain in detail Aristotle’s Four Causes.
b. Which two causes did Aristotle combine? Explain why this combination makes sense.
2. Choose an object and/or living thing. Name and explain its four causes in detail. N.B. A manufactured object requires at least two sets of detailed causes.
End Part A with a conclusion to this section.

Part B: Aquinas’s Ways to Prove God’s Existence 45 pts. Answer the questions fully in order in paragraph form.

Begin Part B with an introduction to Aquinas’s questions.

1- Name (with technical terms) and explain in detail Aquinas’s Five Ways (Proofs) for the existence of God.

2- Not all of Aristotle’s Causes and Aquinas’s Ways relate to each other. Identify and explain in detail which ways of Aquinas correspond to which Causes of Aristotle. Include the number for each way and cause in the answer.

3- a. Which of Aquinas’s Ways/Proofs for God existence do you do think is the strongest argument? Include the number of the Causes and Way in the answer.

b. Explain in detail why you thin as you do.

End Part B with a conclusion to this section

General Conclusion.


Grading:

1-Course content from textbook, class notes, discussions and completeness of answer: 75%

2-Logical flow of ideas with introduction, body, conclusion: 15%

3-Academic English (correct grammar, usage, spelling, punctuation): 10%


NOTE: Points will be deducted for not following directions and for an overabundance of quotes, so kindly follow the above instructions carefully, and write the paper accordingly.
