1. Images of Rulers in the Ancient Near East. Have a look at the votive statue of Gudea (2-12) and then the relief carving depicting Assurnasirpal II Killing Lions (2-14). Compare these very different images of rulers. What might these images tell us about the culture and society which produced them.

2. Akhenaten and the art of the Amarna period. Discuss the attributes that made the artistic style of Akhenaten’s rule new and revolutionary.
