- What are the two fundamentally different modes Professor Oakley describes?
Focus mode and diffuse mode.
2. Describe how the “Pinball” analogy” describes the Focused mode:
When we are learning in a focus mode you are often thinking tightly, no new ideas are going to come in. The rubber bumpers are too close.
3. Explain how“Pinball” analogy and new thoughts are described by the Diffuse mode:
The rubber bumpers are far from one another. You can think very widely, you are attempting to come up with some new ideas.
4. What is the “bottom line” as Professor Oakley describes it? Reflect on the examples given of Edison and Salvador Dolly she provides.
So the bottom line for all of us is when you’re learning, you want to go back and forth between these modes, and if you find yourself, as you’re focusing in on something, trying to learn a new concept or solve a problem, and you get stuck, you want to turn your attention away from that problem and allow the diffuse modes, those resting states, to do their work in the background.
5. What happens in the brain when you procrastinate?
You actually feel a physical pain in the part of your brain that analyzes pain.
6. What are the two ways to handle the perceived pain in the brain associated with procrastination? Which one can be like an addiction?
The first way is you can just kind of keep working a way through it. And research has shown that within a few minutes it actually will disappear. The second way is to turn your attention away and you feel better right away.If you keep doing that it can become an addiction.
7. What is the Pomodoro Technique? And how does it help with procrastination?
The Pomodoro Technique allows you to work with focused attention for 25 minutes, with no distractions. Then when you are done with that you do something fun for a few minutes.
8. Describe how a poor memory can actually be useful when learning?
Poor memory is good because you can’t hold these ideas in your mind so tightly, other ideas are creeping in.
9. Describe how being a slow thinker can actually be useful when learning?
As a slower thinker, you have a completely different experience, you dig deeper and you don’t jump to conclusions.
10. What does “Illusions of Competence in Learning” mean?
This means is you can study all day long and you can be spinning your wheels because you’re not using effective study techniques.
11. What is the most effective technique in learning when reading?
Look at the page, look away, and see what you can recall.
12. Mastery is not enough when learning but should be combined with what two other things?
Practice and repetition
