Questionnaire Wording
Humanities
All of the pairs of items on this handout were forced-choice options on published scales I have found over the years (they are all poorly written examples of items that have been found on questionnaires). Since they are all poorly written, please note that there isn’t necessarily a right/wrong answer for questions 1 & 2. I’m trying to show how challenging it can be it answer these questions when items are poorly written. You will receive full credit for answering these questions as long as you make an attempt. The most important aspect of the assignment is question 5 that you will answer for each set of items. Please give thought to how you can better write each item set.
Directions: Compare each pair of questions. Answer the following questions for each pair of questions.
- What concept is being measured by researchers?
- Does each question measure the concept of interest? Explain.
- Does the item make implicit assumptions about participants? Explain.
- Will you be able to accurately interpret the data? Explain.
- Come with a new statement to assess the concept of interest in the space provided below each item. Also, identify the type of question it will be (likert, forced choice, yes/no, open-ended, etc.)
