Stonehenge is arguably one of the most famous Neolithic structures. It also happens to be one of the most mysterious.

  1. Follow these directions:
    • Consider the theories presented in your textbook regarding the original function of Stonehenge.
    • Discuss which of these theories seems the most plausible.
    • What evidence most aligns with your opinion?
  2. Respond to at least one classmate’s post by offering additional details or ideas, a different perspective, or links to interesting, relevant articles or websites. Conclude with a question or new idea to further stimulate the discussion.

one Classmate response ( It is likely that the original function of Stonehenge was that of an astronomical observatory and solar calendar. The “heel stone” of Stonehenge is perhaps the strongest indication of this original function. For an individual standing in the center of Stonehenge and looking outwards, the heel stone marked the point where the sun rose during the summer solstice. This is a striking indication of the accuracy of Stonehenge as a solar calendar during the Neolithic period. In the lecture, it is also mentioned that there are theories that Stonehenge served as a Druid temple. However, Druid temples were normally built in wooded areas, so it is unlikely that this theory is true. In my opinion, it is likely that Stonehenge served a variety of functions for those who built it.)
