The goal is to practice academic arguments and work with complex ideas. Your argument should clearly delineate your purpose, intended audience, and stance. Your chosen genre is argument, so ensure that you adhere to the elements of argument, and that any design elements are utilized deliberately.

For this essay, you will be arguing one of two positions:

Artistic movements (e.g. the Harlem Renaissance) are a catalyst for sociocultural change

Artistic movements (e.g. the Harlem Renaissance) are a reaction to sociocultural change

Your essay should use examples from the Harlem Renaissance, as well as from at least one artistic movement of your choosing, to bolster your argument. Essays should include no less than five external sources. You may pair artistic sources, such as literature and visual art, with critical theory articles if you wish. Possible sources include: poems; artwork; essays; novels; music; books; magazines; journals; news articles; interviews; speeches.

Your essay should be a minimum of 1000 words and use MLA formatting, including a Works Cited page.

Students who fail to turn in a rough draft on or by the assigned date will lose 25 points for the assignment, and must attend a tutoring session at the on-campus writing center in order to submit their final draft. Those who fail to complete the peer review portion of the assignment will lose 25 points on the assignment.

Rough Draft Due Date: Thursday, October 25th at 11:59 pm.

Peer Review Due Date: Sunday, October 28th at 11:59 pm.
