Read Thomas Jefferson’s “The Declaration of Independence” (220).

  • To understand it better, divide it into its three major component parts. Draw a line at the end of part 1, which explains the general principles behind the revolutionary action. Then draw a line at the end of part 2, which lists the reasons for the action. Finally, identify the purpose of the third and last brief part of the document.
  • The document presents an argument with the value warrants stated in part 1, the support in part 2, and the conclusion in part 3. Summarize the ideas in each part of the argument.
  • Test the argument by questioning the warrants and the support. Do you agree with them? If you accept them, you accept the conclusion.
  • Identify some of the proofs in the document, and comment on their soundness and effectiveness.
  • Describe the predominant style in the document and give examples that support your answer.
  • Write a 500-word journal entry in which you explain the insights you now have about the structure, proofs, and style of the Declaration of Independence.
