Discussion 1: Challenges Related to Data Collection in Research
Doctoral student blogs frequently highlight the particularly chaotic nature of the period just preceding proposal approval. Across fields and universities, obtaining proposal approval involves iterative cycles of revisions and some form of final defense of the proposal. Students are inevitably quite exhausted when they get to the ethics review phase (which comes just after proposal approval). That is why students who have anticipated the potential ethical challenges of data collection related to their particular topic, population, and setting are at a considerable advantage. Ideally, students should consider these ethical challenges and strategies for resolving them prior to designing their study.
For this Discussion, consider the Ethics Planning Worksheet you completed in Week 9.
Post by Day 3 a brief description of three potential ethical challenges related to data collection you encountered in completing your Ethics Planning Worksheet and explain why each was a challenge. Then, describe one strategy that addresses each challenge and explain how each might address the challenge.
