This course, we will approach writing and rhetoric as

  • a process of design
  • a tool of inquiry and exploration
  • a means of participating in communities and conversations
  • a means of generating knowledge, creating relationships, building bridges, and empowering self and others
  • ethical action in the world

We will practice rhetorical dexterity, which involves

  • critical awareness of the conventions or “rules” for language, writing, and communication in different situations and communities
  • making conscious choices to follow and/or subvert conventions in order to communicate effectively in different situations according to our purposes and values
