While the term Postmodern denotes a distinct time period and type of art, more than anything else, it is an embrace, understanding, questioning, and critique of the very culture we live within. As Cain et al argue, at its core, “Postmodernism breaks, disrupts, challenges boundaries, including our understanding of what it means to be a human being, a person” (Cain, McDermott, Newman, & Wyss, 2014, p. 1148). The literature connected to the time period includes several common denominators that address the social, political, economic, etc. state of being within the scope of the American life and conscious after the Modern Era.

Two of the most notable of poets from the period, Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton’s, work confronts traditional ideas about gender, motherhood, friendship, family dynamics, and place in the modern world. How does each writer explore the issues listed, and how does the construction of their poems add to or emphasize their messages. Pay special attention to literary elements such as diction, syntax, metaphor, tone, theme, etc. Then support your assessments with specific and properly cited examples from the primary texts.
