The hypocrisy of this form of treating people

Feedback from the discussion on crack cocaine and powder cocaine.

Rosa,

This is an interesting post. I disagree with putting substance abusers in prison at all, so tend to disagree that someone who cannot afford cocaine that buys crack cocaine should have a harsher penalty then one who happens to be higher on the socio-economic status. Frankly if the prevailing opinion in the treatment world is that addiction is a brain disease then why are we not treating these individuals for their disease? I am not opposed to mandated treatment long-term through the courts, but I am opposed to warehousing our mentally ill substance abusing people in prison. Thoughts on the hypocrisy of this form of treating people with issues like this?
