Topic: You can choose any topic that you are confident to write and do the research about it.

Purpose: To write a 5-7 page research paper that is argumentative on a topic of your choice. Remember that an argumentative paper must have a solid stance on a particular topic that is debatable, and will present a rebuttal to the opposition. Your paper should include:

  • An introduction that gets me interested in your topic and has a clear, specific thesis that presents a solid stance for one side of the argument. If you use any borrowed information, MLA in-text citations are required. The argument thesis states your side of the argument and previews the reasons you will cover as to why your side is the best side.
  • body paragraphs that are well organized and transition well. Make sure that you vary how you present your research. All quotes will make things very boring for me, so you can choose to paraphrase. Try to keep that originality check to 25% or under. MLA in-text citations are required. You must use at least 3 sources for information, so at least 3 different in-text citations are required.
  • A conclusion that makes sure to restate, not repeat, the thesis, and wraps up all major points. Be sure that I know why this topic is so important. If you borrow information, use MLA in-text citations.
  • Works Cited page that is in MLA format. You must have at least 3 credible sources listed.

Audience/Tone: Maintain the highest level of academic language. Use that thesaurus to avoid repeating words or using overworked words like “good” and “very”. Avoid first person. No second person or contractions. If I am not able to help with revising, make sure you at least run your paper through Grammarly. The Writing Center can help with editing, but not necessarily proofreading (they won’t just check for grammar, but they will do comprehension.
