Compare and Contrast Two Paintings

Humanities

The picture at the bottom taken in a museum is the painting I am using from the art show it is called “Boudreaux in a Barrel”by George Rodrigue and compare and contrast it with a painting By Claude Lorrain called “Pastoral Landscape” that is also shown at the bottom.

  • Select ONE George Rodrigue painting from the art show and compare and contrast it with ONE historical landscape painting discussed in class (for example, Nicolas Poussin, Claude Lorrain, Annibale Carracci, Jacob van Ruisdael, Aelbert Cuyp, Albrecht Dürer, Pieter Bruegel, John Constable, Caspar David Friedrich, Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, George Braque, Georgia O’Keeffe).
  • The essay should:
    • Include information about the artists, their lives, geographic origins and inspirations
    • Identify technique (usually: oil on canvas), title, date, dimensions
    • Engage visual information provided by the work of art itself: Describe what you see and interpret this visual information.
    • Point out the historical context and inherent aesthetic qualities of the work. Ask yourself questions such as this: How is an Italianate or a Dutch landscape different from a Louisiana landscape? How does a seventeenth-century landscape differ from a twentieth-century landscape? What choices did artists make to stress geographic and cultural specificities of landscapes?
    • What motivated the artists to portray the landscapes the way they did? How are the taste of the time when the artists lived and the historical context of each work reflected in the rendering?
    • Write in clear and grammatically correct English. Only write full sentences.
  • Each paper should be 2 pages long(not counting cover page), double spaced and with standard margins. Possible illustrations do not count toward the two-page requirement.
